Call us today at 510-490-2187. 220V Transformer Description and Uses220V Transformers are commonly available. Quite often they are a two to one conversion step down transformer. This means that the voltage drop expected will be half of the rated incoming (primary circuit) power. The resulting 110V power will then match normal U.S. appliance and small electrical device usage. Inversion of connections to get a 110V to 220V supply can often be done to achieve a step up transformer condition. This will work so long as one is also careful to assure that the correct delta or wye patterns are incorporated in the transformer. Additionally, one should note that the frequency is correct for the locale. In Europe and much of the world outside the U.S. it will be 50Hz, whereas in the U.S. it is almost exclusively 60Hz. Other secondary voltages may be achieved if desired, but reversal of use may then possibly not be an option.Small portable single-appliance 220V transformer versions are often seen sold with appliances made to operate anywhere in the world. These become more and more common as computers have worked their way into use by nearly everyone. These 220V transformers are sometimes a form of autotransformer and are lighter, cheaper and smaller than a normal transformer. Often these are not true transformers but are referred to as converters. A converter does essentially the same trick, but at the expense of continuous operation and adherence to wave form. A converter cannot operate an electronic device, but can be used for appliances with heating elements or motors. A transformer is good for long-term operation where a converter is only to be used for sporadic operation at an hour or two at a time. The wave form is chopped and is only half of a sine wave pattern in a converter. A transformer can supply any device, electronic or otherwise. It may be beneficial to purchase a larger commercial or heavy-duty personal-use 220V transformer when setting up a building or complex that will use one or more pieces of equipment imported or transported to other locales not wired for 110V. The overall use desired will determine the final version one should purchase. 220V Transformer Cautions It is not advisable to try and "get by" with one of inferior design or capacity when connecting expensive devices. It is easy to undersupply sensitive components that will burn out or be damaged as easily by less voltage as by too much. In a transformer, the rule is that lowering voltage increases amperage. Components consistent with 110V service may be fine with a 15 amp supply at that voltage. But dropping the voltage to 100V by overloading it could result in an 18 amp current. This is one of the reasons why brownouts can be as deadly to electronics as are power spikes. This is also why use of an UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is recommended with computers and sophisticated electronics. A backup battery will kick in at a still safe level and temporarily maintain the correct level until a shutoff can be implemented. Further, something called "inrush current" occurs when a transformer is off and then powered up. Inrush also occurs when electric motors are powered up. Powering items with motors and sensitive electronics from the same transformer may not be a good idea if the transformer is not made for the resulting transient conditions. This is also why large structures with a main transformer and controlled power supply will not always protect sensitive equipment within the same building. The overall building is protected from outside influences, but such structures often have large utility pumps and devices inside the building that use motors. If these are not shielded from the rest of the building they will often cause current drops and spikes that can adversely affect electronics. For a brief moment the current will spike at a much higher than rated level. Once conditions normalize, safe levels will be dominant. Many transformers are shielded against inrush currents by special resistors or other additions in the circuitry. Overloading lighter duty transformers may burn these out as well and lead to a transformer condition that will not protect equipment connected to it. Bottom line; spend the money and get the right fuse transformer, surge transformer, overload transformer or other appropriate transformer for the use expected and refuse to overload. Get enough transformers to service different appliances or electronics so improper combinations will not occur. When necessary, use individual transformers to isolate and shield sensitive equipment in areas other more hardy equipment is used on the same supply of power. Highest Quality 220V Transformers
