This makes it easy when talking about a specific transformer installed in a unit of some kind. It can usually be assumed the secondary voltage is the topic as primary voltages are pretty much fixed at a few higher voltage numbers used standardly around the world. In previous pages (220V Transformer and 120V Transformer) the primary side voltage capacity was spoken of when referring to a transformer because we were referring to one of these limited number of standardly applied voltage levels in a primary circuit. The frequency will also be different. It is usually understood that such circuits are produced using an isolation transformer configuration to protect form harm by contacting mains currents, but one should ALWAYS exert caution, regardless. When 24V is on the primary It was earlier stated that new technologies were changing status of the 24V from secondary to primary. In this case it is to be found very commonly in solar and wind power systems. There, the 24 volts starts as DC (in solar panels and small wind turbines) or variable AC (in large, usually commercial wind generators) and is run through a transformer and conditioned with diodes, rectifiers and filter systems to produce AC. Usually this will be 120v or 240V, unless to European standard 230V power. The most sophisticated, and most desirable, version of such conditioning produces a true sine wave pattern with appropriate frequency. Because of this any unused power can be redirected into the power grid with no liability. In fact, it is an income source for those who produce such power and sell their unused portion to the power companies involved. Such transformer and conditioning equipment are referred to as a unit as inverters. It must be noted that any transformer used with DC current cannot function as a transformer without the presence of some sort of electronic or mechanical means of interrupting the flow of DC power in a predictable and controlled manner. Straight DC power will flow through a primary winding without producing any usable induction because induction is dependent on constantly changing electrical fields. Such fields are a function of changing or oscillating currents, which DC current is not. Additionally, 24V current in solar and wind applications is often more desirable than 12V current because lower voltages require significantly larger diameter wires to carry the power efficiently. 48V and even 96V systems are not unheard of. In all systems where the power may be stored in 6V, 12V or 24V batteries, the batteries are wired in series in banks equivalent to the basic voltage of the system.
