4 Coil Transformer Construction and Application

A common 4 Coil Transformer configuration is in buck boost transformers wired with two complete sets of primary and secondary windings over the same core. They can be interconnected or set up in series so as to attain low or high outputs that will give a range of connectedness broader than other transformers. More versatility is achieved when both primary and secondary are made in two equal parts. By choosing to wire in either series or parallel, a selection of diverse inputs and outputs can be achieved. In any case, the capacity of the 4 coil transformer will not be affected.

4 Coil Transformers of the buck boost variety are used to lower the voltages to 12V, 16V, 24V, and 48V services. The extra set of coil windings allow for a refined selection of output voltage. In the case of circuits leading to a lowering to 12V to 48V ranges or thereabouts, the circuits are true isolating circuits. They do not directly contact anywhere and are therefore safer from shock being passed down from the primary. They are really fine for low voltage lighting, computer, electronic and other power systems demanding lower voltages.

4 Coil Transformers of the buck boost variety are often also connected in a circuit that lowers, or "bucks" the overall voltage by a small percentage. By changing the taps at which connections are made, this reduction of a small percent can occur. One 4 coil transformer can be wired in six different configurations. For instance, If one needed 120V, but local conditions were chronically high, say 132V, it could be reduced to a normal 120V service.

In a typical 4 coil buck boost transformer another use is to slightly "up," or "boost" current to match a small percentage needed to normalize levels to match local equipment demands. One configuration will result in an input of 120V to output of 132V. These buck and boost set-ups would be in an autotransformer configuration and would not be an isolating circuit. The primary and secondary windings are directly connected in the autotransformer wiring scheme.

Unique custom wiring conditions are available for specialized uses. 4 Coil Transformer configurations have been produced with two complete interconnected primary and two complete interconnected secondary windings on the same core. One such application for this style would be done on signal transformers. The second primary would be of fewer turns and wound in a direction opposite to that of the first primary. That would be duplicated by a first secondary winding in the same direction as the first primary and then a second secondary winding of fewer turns than the first secondary, and wound in opposite direction to its counterpart. In such a design the object is to control mutual inductance and the secondary winding portions are serving as decoupling windings. The result is a more stable product with less outside interference affecting the performance.
