Air Transformer Construction and ApplicationAir Transformers, or Air Core Transformers, follow all the basic and fundamental principles of what a transformer is and how they are constructed. They are usually wound around a nonmagnetic hollow tube or form with primary and secondary paralleling each other. The core material may be paper, plastic, or other non-ferrous and non-magnetic material. The form may also be donut shaped and be wound as a toroidal transformer. They can be center tapped for special uses in matching unequal impedances.By doing without a solid core (as in the solid core toroidal transformer) or laminated core, however, they inherently lose some characteristics and magnify others that would have been enhanced or contained as a result of the effect of a steel core. In the air transformer, due to lack of a steel core, the magnetizing current is not in the least reduced and the flux path remains unrestricted. Because these two characteristics are not controlled, leakage inductance therefore remains high. In the metal core transformer these would be huge drawbacks, but the air transformer can therefore be used in applications where this lack of confinement becomes a plus.One such area is in radio frequency applications where a high bandwidth is useful. A metal core would have stifled this. The effects of magnetism and induction in metal that results in some retention of changes in state (called hysteresis) is absent in the air transformer. Also absent are eddy current losses and saturation. Regulation of current is sacrificed for responsiveness and a wider field of sensitivity. Most certainly, a modulated frequency or amplitude would be most easily and accurately stepped up using transformers with air cores. Some transformers are used for signal detection while others amplification. Air transformers are often used in parallel with a capacitor. This allows tuning to resonance. Large radio transmitters can have coils meter-sized. When unshielded, air core (solenoid) transformers are oriented to each other at right angles to prevent stray coupling.Air Transformer HistoryAs seen on the upper right, second picture, one of the more spectacular of air transformer applications was to be found in the Tesla Coil. This is still in use today in science fairs and expositions. But his original idea was to provide electricity for power use by transmitting energy through the ground and the air. In fact, many demonstrations he performed showed he was doing just that. He built an installation on the east coast, on Long Island in New York, which was to transmit to an installation in Europe as his final large-scale proof that it could be done. The energy was to be received and transformed to levels useful in electrical appliances and other devices. Economic hardship insured he never got to complete his experiment with this money-making venture..In fact, it was Tesla who invented this device and also he who invented and developed the whole concept of AC power. He was a genius so far ahead of his time that some of the things he swore could be made are still only dreams to scientists now.
