Call us today at 510-490-2187. What is a Cast Transformer?Cast Transformers come in more than one type. These have advantages over a strictly dry-type transformer with no resin encasement. They are also preferable to a liquid filled transformer, in many cases, where they can meet the required voltages.Cast Resin Transformers are a dry-type transformer with a solid resin coating cast around the transformer. It may or may not use a vacuum to aid in the process of encapsulating the transformer, and there will me no mold used while curing. The resin can potentially move during curing and leave voids around some of the windings. Some manufacturers give the transformer a second dip to further protect the integrity of the windings from exposure to the atmosphere. In the cast resin process the manufacturer has the advantage of using some other resin type that has a higher heat limit (whereas Solid Cast processes are invariably limited to epoxy resin.)Solid Cast Transformers are transformer windings that are encapsulated in a mold, using a vacuum, and with a resin that will be allowed to be cured before removing the mold. This is a better process than the other version since the resin is never allowed the possibility of running out of the windings before curing. There is far less chance of empty pockets left behind. The mold also assures a thicker coat will be retained, thus strengthening the unit. This also means that no extra support or external bracing will be needed as one often finds in the other type.Additionally, there is what is called Filled Resin. Particles of various substances can be suspended in the resin mixture to increase the mechanical strength of the resin. Up to 60% of this mixture may be filler. Sand, glass particles, quartz flour, silica flour, or similar materials are used. Fiberglass can be included in the resin of the solid cast version, and this will protect it against short-circuit stresses usually requiring external bracing.Cast Transformer AdvantagesFor its use, a cast Transformer is a great alternative. It is highly stable in wet or dry environments, moisture proof, light, easy to install, highly fire resistant and fire retardant, self-extinguishing, environmentally safe, resistant to reduced life and efficiency from winding movement, requires no special containment other than protective enclosures in rough conditions, and is mountable in close proximity to the equipment for which it will be used. Due to its non-flammable nature, a cast transformer is very suitable for high-rise, hospital and residential application. Since it is proofed up against moisture, it can be used indoors or outside with equal confidence. Wherever liquid filled transformers are anathema, you can install a cast transformer; in tunnels, cranes and offshore platforms, in catch-ment areas for groundwater, on ships, in food procession plants, etc. They are virtually maintenance free for life. Because they can be installed close to use, costs of installation may fall dramatically. Savings result on things such as reduced cable runs, materials costs, transmission costs, and extra labor. The resin protects otherwise sensitive windings from abrasion and impacts and will extend the useful life of the unit. The resin coating makes them ideal in areas subject to chemical fumes, salt spray and chemical exposure. Cast Transformers are often arranged with primary and secondary switchgear, their own distribution boards, and all the accouterments into compact point-of-use substations. There is no need for specially constructed vaults, catch basins or vents for toxic gasses. Since there is no fluid involved and they do not need extra shielding or container layers as with many liquid filled transformers, they can be more compact and lighter. These factors, in turn, save in initial shipping costs, labor, space allowances, and need for expensive construction. Cast Transformer Configurations AvailableCast Transformers are to be found in a wide variety of configurations. Step up transformers, step down transformers, autotransformers, buck boost transformers, isolation transformers, medical isolation transformers, etc., large and small, are available. With the exception of the larger transformer sizes for transmission and substation use, one might find a cast transformer that will do the job. Currently, although 15 kV is common, the upper limit can be as much as 34.5 kV, and KVA ratings go up through 10,000, though 5,000 is usually considered the usual limit.Highest Quality Cast Transformers
