Call us today at 510-490-2187. The Delta Transformer: What is it? How is it wired?The Delta Transformer could more properly be called a Three Phase Delta-Delta Transformer. Delta refers to the wiring pattern used in the primary and secondary windings. This pattern is aptly represented in wiring diagrams as you see on the right. It is called "Delta" for its schematic resemblance to the Greek letter for which it is named. The term "Delta" may also at times be used to refer to one of either primary or secondary winding configurations in a transformer using a wye configuration for the opposite side of the transformer.A description of the use of the two main category of patterns, delta and wye, is found on the Three Phase Transformers page. In this transformer each phase is represented as a coiled winding whose ends are connected to a junction of one end of one of the other phase windings. There is no point common to all three phases. What this means in practical application is that they are configured so that the line voltage and the phase voltage are the same. When secondary voltage is also Delta, the voltage for each line will be proportionally dropped or raised and feed from each phase circuit will be equal to that of either of the other two phase circuits.Delta-Delta transformers tend to suffer from circulating currents that may cause excessive heating in the transformers. For this reason, any ganged transformers must be matched so their impedance is close to the same. If not, voltage drops will develop which will cause circulation of such unwanted currents. The voltage ratio of the three transformers must also be matched for the same reason. Phase shifting may help, especially when interconnected grids or transmission systems have differing phase and power characteristics. One must exercise caution when connecting three transformer in this configuration as it is possible to misconnect polarities. A doubling of one of the phases would create, in effect, a shorted circuit condition. Delta Transformer UseThe main advantage of a delta transformer with a delta primary and a delta secondary is clearly that any equipment or downlink feeds will transfer the power in direct and equal proportions to each of the three legs of the transmission system. Further, no fourth neutral wire will be needed and this produces lots of savings when stringing large transmission wires over long distances. This equality is retained throughout the transmission system until the point where needs dictate splitting off part of the power for differing voltage levels. Such is regularly the case in the distribution end. From this point it becomes important to have a fourth wire available to stabilize circuitry and provide the capacity to split off differing voltages for local single phase applications. The fourth wire provides a neutral point for creation of a line to neutral for single phase loads and for safety grounding.Delta-wye configurations take over and supply the services for 208V and 120V circuits used in homes, offices, and small businesses. These are often banked transformers. See more about wye configurations on the Wye Transformer page. This Delta-Wye transformer can be a large medium capacity transformer in a substation. In the distribution system it is usually the pole mount distribution transformer or perhaps a pad mount distribution transformer you will find outside the point of use.Delta-Delta transformers are often used to service large three phase equipment as in industrial motors and other three phase power loads. When a single phase supply is needed for such things as simple lighting requirements, special delta transformers can be purchased that have a center tap in one leg of a secondary. In this way a neutral or ground connection is created. This allows half of the power supply voltage to be utilized without installing an entirely different service for that purpose. One caveat here is that the transformer with this done to it must be capable of carrying its share of the three phase load AND the single phase load without overloading.Delta-Delta connections can be made between two different delta transformers to create what is known as the "open delta" configuration. This can be a permanent version to supply three phase power when the resulting power is sufficient for all needs. Or it can be used to remove a failed transformer from a bank of three where time is needed to replace the failed transformer but one wishes to continue having some power to operate with.Other combinations of delta and wye are available for specific uses.
