Dyn11 Transformers Explained

Transformers like the Dyn11 transformer are now categorized with a vector group designation that refers to the phase angle shift between the secondary and the primary. In today's power system practices this is a big issue and this data must be available for correct interfacing and operation of systems. Interconnecting two power generation or transmission networks can result in adverse power characteristics if not done correctly. Particularly, the phase angle of each system must be matched with the other system or circulating currents can develop. Also, power in one can buck with power in another and cause loss in efficiency. Or power in one can boost power in the other and create overloads. Special phase shifting transformers exist for the purpose of adjusting such loads to match phase angles.

Dyn11 Transformer Notation Explained

In the dyn11 transformer designation, each letter and the number have specific data to communicate. It defines the primary and secondary types, indicates the presence or lack of a neutral, and gives the phase angle displacement between them. Sometimes you will see other letters used that are not seen on this one notation (Dyn11). These will be included below so you will recognize them when you see them. When indicating the primary circuit, the letters are always upper case. When indicating the secondary circuit they are always lower case.

dyn11 means:

D - Primary is DELTA connected (a delta transformer primary)

y - Secondary is WYE, or STAR, connected (a star transformer secondary)

n - Indicates a Neutral Point existing in the secondary connection

11 - Indicates a 30ْْ lag in phase

11 refers to the 11 o'clock position. Adopted international convention uses the hour indicator system to represent phase displacement. According to this convention, rotation is always considered counter-clockwise. The use of a particular number of degrees, then, will say whether it is leading or lagging. In the Dyn11, the 11 indicates 330ْ lagging. Any reference to 30ْ in regards to a Dyn11 is about leading voltage or the amount it is off from 12. A minus sign will indicate low voltage lagging high voltage; a plus sign indicates low voltage leading high voltage.

Each hour represents 30ْْ .

1 = 30ْْ lagging / 330ْْ leading

2 = 60ْْ lagging / 300ْْ leading

3 = 90ْْ lagging / 270ْْ leading

6 = 180ْْ lagging / 180ْْ leading

12 = 0ْْ or 360ْ neither leading nor lagging

HV - High Voltage (primary)

hv - High Voltage (secondary)

LV - Low Voltage (primary)

lv - Low Voltage (secondary)

Z - Interconnected Star* (primary)

z - Interconnected Star (secondary)

– - Low Voltage lagging High Voltage

+ - Low Voltage leading High Voltage

*Interconnected Star is another name for a special zigzag connection of a wye transformer set-up that is used to provide grounding for a low tension side delta-connected power transformer. It is also can serve as an auxiliary transformer to provide a substation with its own power.

Additional markings exist which you may find on a Dyn11 transformer or any other three phase transformer, and you may need to consult our experts at TEMCo to sort these out. The main thing to realize is that there ARE such markings where appropriate. These are very useful when deciding which configuration the existing transformer will connect to successfully, or which transformer must be purchased in order to be compatible with the existing system. They will also help in knowing which taps to wire to which lines.
