The Filled Transformer Liquids

The term Filled Transformer actually also refers to Liquid Transformer or Liquid Filled Transformers. It indicates the practice of immersing a set of transformer windings in a protective bath of fluid made out of any of a variety of materials. Most common is the traditional highly refined mineral oil, but science and progress has expanded to adding much more technically developed and efficient fire resistant fluids. The most common of these are discussed on the Liquid Filled Transformer page. The Liquid Transformer page discusses code requirements, containment, and information on flammability designations. Suffice it to say for purposes here, oils are used primarily to cool and next to insulate. Since oils are usually non-soluble in water they are used to restrict moisture from having access to sensitive electrical pathways that might otherwise result in a catastrophic failure of the circuits involved.

The dynamic ability of heat dissipation of filled transformers as opposed to the more static capabilities of cast transformers lends itself well to the creation of a transformer that will last a long time, be very serviceable, and carry loads under more extreme circumstances while maintaining high efficiency with low losses.

Where Filled Transformers are Used

Since Cast transformers are restricted to smaller sizes all really high voltage transformers will be filled transformers. Additionally, the larger the transformer, the more likely it can be a custom-ordered unit specifically designed for a major installation. Such installations will include places like hydroelectric plants, steam plants, coal plants, nuclear plants and any other place where large amounts of power are generated. This is the head of the power transmission system. The largest of these will most often be step up transformers immediately following the generation equipment at such plants.

The transmission of power requires increasing voltages to extreme ranges for the sake of carrying power over very long distances. Step up transformers are also sometimes used in substations to boost power up again to be routed further along the transmission system. But the smaller local in-house systems often will employ cast transformers due to ease of installation, efficiency of size, economy of construction and other factors. It is obvious that, while cast transformers definitely have their place in the system, the filled transformer is the mainstay of the transmission/distribution network.

Filled Transformers can also be step down transformers and will be seen more commonly (in the larger sizes) at substations. Again, the reliability, serviceability, and high standards of a filled transformer at this point is highly desirable since they have a long life and can be refurbished when their efficiency goes down or they fail for any reason.

They are at the head of the distribution system at this point, but can also be found at the tail end of the same system in the form of pole mount transformers and pad mount transformers, and are often used locally for industrial situations. It is quite common for large industrial complexes to have their own systems of heavy filled transformers to distribute adequate power to large machinery.

Specialty filled transformers that are also step up transformers can be found where ship to shore power is being used. In times of emergency large ships with diesel, or even nuclear generators are employed to stand in for power generation plants that have been disabled, damaged, or destroyed. Many ships, especially military, have the capacity to run the power for whole cities of tens- or hundreds-of-thousands of people. On-site power stations, as in off-shore oil rigs, power stations for islands, remote experimental stations, etc. may need step down transformers so as to run standard equipment set up for normal power loads. Larger installations spread out over miles may employ both.
