Call us today at 510-490-2187. Fuse TransformersMost any standard transformer may be protected through the use of fuses or self-tripping breakers. Control transformers are especially mentioned when fuse transformers are the topic. They step down the voltage and are connected to circuitry often dedicated in providing power for solenoid switches and other low voltage control circuits. A fuse transformer will have fuse holders integrated into the construction. Fuses are a relatively inexpensive and convenient form of protection and are ideal in may cases where installation of automatic circuit breakers are either inconvenient or more expensive than the application warrants. Also a factor is that breakers usually take longer to clear and therefore a fuse may be more advisable. This is especially true when the secondary fuse may clear before an up line breaker. The secondary voltage may rise to primary voltage level before the up line breaker clears.Fuse transformers are usually protected against up line surges and down line faults that would otherwise cause stresses and damage to either the transformer or the equipment it is connected to. The fuse employed must account for the inrush currents often encountered at power-up of transformers and certain kinds of electrical equipment. For a very short time a surge of VA far beyond the normal operating levels flows into the circuits. It soon stabilizes into the rated levels. The additional VA demands by other devices on the same circuit must be added in as well. While they may not create an inrush current, they will affect the overall VA at startup and thus the rating for the fuse that must be used. More recent fusing philosophies have evolved in which the traditional low voltage side of small kVA single phase distribution transformers is not the only focus for fusing or adding breakers. It has been found over time that pole mount transformers and pad mount transformers are not damaged so much because of secondary spikes, faults and slow degradation of windings, but due to lightning strikes or surges from sudden damages incurred on the high, or primary side, of the circuit. Storms blowing wires around and causing them to contact, downed poles and lines, or auto collisions with power poles can result in such stresses. Up to this change in orientation low fusing ratios protecting transformers on the secondary side was the accepted practice. Now, however, up line surges are being protected against by placing arresters in the transformer tank. To minimize issues where small surge currents must be passed by fuses, a necessary increase in fuse rating is implemented. They will withstand such small surges, but continue to offer adequate protection against:
Fuse Transformer StandardsWhen fusing a power control fuse transformer, allowance for a 40% power factor is considered reasonable when better data is not available. In a 600V transformer overcurrent protective devices on the secondary side must be, by current regulations, set at or rated at not more than 125% of the rated primary current assigned for the transformer. If a 9 amp or more primary circuit is used and 125% of this does not conform to any standard fuse rating or fixed-range circuit breaker, the next higher standard rating may be used. If less than 9 amps overcurrent devices not exceeding 167% of primary current are permissible. In the case of a primary current less that 2 amps overcurrent devices set or rated at no more than 300% will be permitted. But your specific system must be configured to existing loads and uses and you should consult with our experts to assure the protection you install is adequate and reasonable. Incomplete planning and allowances for existing conditions can leave your system open to expensive damage to equipment and possible exposure of personnel to dangerous voltage failures.
