High Frequency Transformer Types and Applications

High frequency transformers are used in several areas in the electrical and electronics fields. Some forms of high frequency transformers that are commonly found are audio transformers, pulse transformers, driver transformers and switching transformers. They may drive audio equipment or be used in televisions. Communication and radio systems use them extensively. Medical equipment has them in many variations, including x-ray machines and special monitoring displays. Computer monitors and display monitors need them. Radar installations of all kinds, from the very big government type to the very oven you use to "nuke" your morning coffee and breakfast roll employ them. They are found as SMPS transformers (switching transformers) in light and compact power supplies for electronics. Aircraft and other vehicles where space is at a premium use high frequency transformers in their power generation. The air transformer is another application where high frequency power is useful in electronic radio and audio equipment. It is also possible someday that it will be used in a power transmission system as originally envisioned by Tesla.

High Frequency Transformer Construction

The advantage of a high frequency transformer is to be found in the effects of high frequency on magnetic cores used in transformers. The EMF (electromotive force) upon which a transformer depends to cause induction increases with frequency levels. By increasing the frequency at which one operates a transformer, the transformer can be more compact. It will produce much more power before becoming saturated. Fewer turns are necessary to arrive at the same impedance. Due to this reduced core and winding weight, and the increased compactness, they are ideal in anything portable and anywhere space is limited by other factors.

There are a few drawbacks like increased core loss and the conductor skin effect increasing with frequency. These are not prohibitive and do not outweigh the great advantages of using a high frequency transformer. But operating a given transformer outside its designed frequency is not prudent without knowing the specifics on the various parameters it is designed to operate safely within. Things like losses, voltages and cooling will be affected. Reduced magnetizing current may be encountered.
