Ignition Transformers Defined

Ignition transformers are a quite old technology that has also been enhanced by the use of more modern techniques. The essential design and intention is based on a transformer that is very high voltage on its secondary side and coupled with a capacitor. The capacitor allows the voltage to build without being partially dispersed while building. Once it reaches the optimum voltage it then disperses through the line. This provides a high voltage pulse that is released at a controlled and predictable value. It is actually a form of pulse transformer. It also usually only lasts a very short time. However, it is possible to have the action continue repeatedly when desired. Such action will be wired to a timer or perhaps a hand control or trigger.

Ignition Transformer Application

The original purpose of an ignition transformer is to start a combustion of some fuel. Such ignition transformers have been used for over 100 years in automobiles. A common application of this same idea of ignition transformer is in gas and oil furnaces. In this use the igniting discharge may last for a certain longer controlled period to assure ignition.

In modern days they can also serve to energize certain systems that will only activate when there has been an adequate pulse to start an action. The could still be considered an ignition transformer, but this time the ignition would be perhaps in the form of an arc or an activated process. Arc lighting, halogen, mercury vapor, neon and other processes all demand an initialization be performed where a surge is present as a starter current.

Another such use is in electronics where bursts of controlled energy are found useful for a variety of reasons. Radar depends on this principal. The common radar oven uses a microwave transformer to energize the special tube that produces the radar waves used to cook with. Data streams are produced by the intermittent production of closely managed on/off values. Patterns of such pulses are used to represent packets of information that can be interpreted on arrival by other circuitry.

Other uses of ignition transformers are in photographic flash triggering devices, shock sticks, tazers, and potential new forms of weaponry.

Scientific applications are rampant and major. They are used in research and development equipment such as particle accelerators, production of ion beams, isotopic enrichment, potential generators, etc. There are disadvantages. Current is not controlled and overloads that will damage equipment are possible. Preventive measures must be in place to shut off energy sources once the charging voltage is attained. But In all of these uses the advantage of being able to maintain a constant voltage value within a prescribed parameter is invaluable.
