The Liquid Filled Transformer Liquids

As discussed in the Liquid Transformer page, a liquid filled transformer will have a fluid bath insulating it from various factors. Generally, the liquid used will often be a highly refined mineral oil. However, research is constantly being done to increase reliability and especially fire resistance. Liquid Filled Transformers are often desired in locations inside structures and resistance to fires is a very important factor. The need for something that would simplify the fire safety measures necessary for indoor installations was important enough to warrant such research.

Several liquids have been developed during this research. Silicone based oils are now in use. They are very stable, heat resistant, do not readily combine with chemicals, resists microbiological contamination, and can be made highly electrically insulating. They are also biodegradable and will not harm the environment.

At one time, a liquid containing PCBs was used and was considered the best in retardant capabilities; however, it was outlawed due to health and environmental considerations. Fluorinated carbons are now used. They have higher resistance to fire and heat while also being more stable. More recently, oils derived from organic sources have proved to be among the highest in ability to maintain integrity at very high temperatures.

Canola oil (rapeseed oil) and soy oils are very good examples of this variety. Synthetics known as pentaerythritol esters are now highly desirable because they are more biodegradable and not hazardous in water. Their fire resistance when used in liquid filled transformers is far superior to mineral oil.

Disadvantages of Liquid Filled Transformers

Liquid filled Transformers often have to be specially contained. Besides the fire hazard involved with leaking oils, there are environmental concerns. Possibility of fire remains an important issue, despite that use of the better oils can limit this to a very low probability. Containment also implies a more remote installation which, in turn, means longer cable runs with attendant higher power losses. Cast transformers can be installed much more flexibly and often right adjacent to where the power is to be used. Liquid filled transformers require periodic maintenance and testing to assure optimum performance. Higher heat resistant fluids can cost more, though this cost is sometimes made up for by reducing containment requirements that will save on installation and space parameters.

Advantages of Liquid Filled Transformers

Liquid Filled Transformers are more stable under extreme conditions. They can tolerate operation even during overloads up to 30% above rated capacity. They can be produced in virtually any kVA capacity. Flexibility of design makes them desirable for many uses. For instance, cooling vanes, fans, radiators, special coolant pumps, filters, convection of the filler, and design characteristics will allow heat to be more uniformly distributed and controlled than in dry transformers. Use of a liquid coolant and insulator allows installation of special sensors that will tell if gas is accumulating inside the transformer; a sign of an electric arc in the winding. This allows automatic intervention before a catastrophic burnout. Efficient cooling allows life of windings and winding insulation to be extended; protection against moisture also contributes to this. They are more readily serviced and repaired. Sometimes when a dry transformer is done a liquid filled transformer can be rebuilt and start its life anew!
