Magnetic Transformers Clarified

Magnetic transformers are constructed to operate at the usual low frequencies encountered in the world's power distribution systems (50/60 Hz.) Because of this low frequency characteristic, they exhibit far less voltage drop across long distances than will high frequency transformers. They are durable and dependable in performance. Transformers are commonly referred to as power transformers when of this design except when we are speaking of them in low-voltage lighting uses. Then it is common to hear of them as magnetic transformers to distinguish then from their counterparts.

The optional electronic transformer design used is more compact, smaller and has features included for electrical short protection. They are also high frequency transformers. Either of the magnetic transformer or electronic transformer in low voltage lighting use will be a mains transformer. It will also most commonly be a 12V transformer, but can be a 24V transformer. The electronic transformer will more likely create local interference in TV or radio reception and require line filters due to its high frequency. A magnetic transformer will not.

Magnetic Transformer Caveats

The magnetic transformer has some liabilities as compared to the electronic transformer. Besides being heavier and bulkier, it needs to have more of its maximum operational voltage in use at all times. An electronic transformer will usually not affect the bulbs used when at no less than 50% of its rated wattage. But a magnetic transformer must operate at a minimum of 80% to ensure the bulbs will not burn out due to voltages going beyond standard wattage. All such magnetic transformers are designed to carry a full load.

Choosing a Magnetic Transformer over an Electronic Transformer

As above, variation of load is an issue when you cannot predict that the load will be rather constant. If lighting loads are to change a great deal (as in at least half of the lights being on and off at fluctuating times) an electronic transformer would be preferable. But one can predict no issues if all lights connected to a transformer are either on or off at the same time. Then it is a simple matter of figuring the load, as described in the buck boost low voltage application page, and going from there.

Another consideration is whether you can expect to use a lot of electronic appliances in the same area. Will this create too much interference by using an electronic transformer instead of a magnetic one? This may not be an issue except as limitations become obvious. Look at other parts of the situation. Weighed against other options it may become apparent that cost, service, space, etc. may quickly eliminate one or the other of the transformer types. With the electronic transformer you will have to provide filtering against high frequencies. This may not be the way you want to go.

Magnetic transformers have long been considered more reliable. They are considered to be easily dimmed. They are also heavier, so any local mounting will possibly be more obvious to the eye. The bulk and weight may limit where you can install. Remote installations are possible so long as proper precautions are taken to incorporate correct power load computations to allow for voltage drops. Use of correct gauge wire going to the load is essential in providing for the voltage drop and maintaining efficient and reliable service.
