Mains Isolating Transformer Description and Uses

Mains isolating transformers depart from those described in a previous page (Mains Transformer) in that an isolating transformer is usually constructed so that the input and output voltages are the same.  The key advantage of such a transformer is that the main and secondary circuits never actually physically connect.  All power is passed indirectly by force of induction of current from main to secondary circuits.  They are often used to protect sensitive electronic equipment in testing, temporary monitoring, and experimental situations.  The same protection extends to personnel who might come in contact with the secondary connections.  Direct exposure to mains power might cause failures and burnouts, or destructive shocks to lab technicians and others in the area.  Coupled with a variac toroid bench-top model transformer, a relatively safe and versatile combination is established.  A combined variac/isolation transformer is available through TEMCo.

In some places a minimum of two mains isolation transformers are used.  One is to isolate ALL the sensitive equipment in the shop or laboratory from direct connection with mains ground.  The second one isolates the equipment being tested or repaired. 

They might also be used within a circuit to protect especially sensitive components from larger voltages that could harm them.  Parts like computer and control chips of various kinds that operate on minute voltages can be isolated from larger voltages that would not harm other parts, like relays, solenoids and motors.

One large area of use as yet unmentioned is the medical industry.  This is now a sphere of operation containing a large number of high-tech, very expensive and elaborate medical equipment.  Additionally, there are a great number of personnel and patients exposed to these pieces of equipment on an ongoing daily and hourly basis.  Some of the conditions include direct contact of power equipment to internal body parts (As in surgery and dental care.)  Chance of shock and catastrophic accidents is greatly magnified as a result.  All medically utilized electrical devices undergo far more rigorous inspections and requirements that in most other fields.  Here is a prime area where medical grade mains isolating transformers fulfill an important role.  Mains isolating transformers an and other transformers may also be shielded.  It is common for medical isolation quality transformers to have as many as three shields.

Occasionally, one of these mains isolating transformers can be used to combat noise issues.  Under the correct wiring configuration they can also help eliminate groundloop issues, but the grounding has to be done right.  In some practices around the world grounding varies as to how it is accomplished.  Some configurations will affect groundloop situations while some will not.  An example is; some mains isolation transformers in places around the world are required not to isolate the grounding wire.  Only the hot and neutral wires are isolated.  Computer circuits and data communication circuits connect to the ground and not to the neutral.  Under this configuration the mains isolation transformer will have absolutely no Effect on the computer's grounding issues.
