State-of-the-Art Stock & Custom Mains Transformer Manufacturer Offering Top Quality at Wholesale PricesMains TransformerCall TEMCo today for delivering leading industry products that will supply your electrical needs and help sustain your business functions, such as ordering a mains transformer for a new building or power expansion. Call us today at 510-490-2187. Mains Transformer DescriptionMains transformers are a common and in-demand transformer style. They are used as step down transformers in order to reduce voltages from the supply voltage of 230-240 in the UK or 115-120V in the U.S. and other countries that use that standard of voltage. Their secondary voltage will be a lower safe voltage for common use in a multitude of low voltage applications. While they may not be of 4 coil winding pattern; many are. Some may only be 3 wire, or 2 wire. But the difference in winding for 2 , 3 or 4 wires is so negligible, and the benefits so great, that the usual is to see a 4 coil pattern used. When a two coil primary winding pattern is used in the mains transformer, the two can be parallel connected to get full use of the windings and service the 115/120V primary service. For the 30/240V service they will be connected in series. When connected together it will be important to get them wired the correct way so as to maintain the correct sense of power flow. When 2 coil secondary windings are present the two circuits can remain separate to provide two independent supplies, or connected in series to create either a center-tapped coil or a single circuit with double the voltage.Core styles in mains transformers can be varied. The Stacked laminated core transformer design of the popular E-I frame construction is common and inexpensive to produce. But a toroidal design is much more efficient, can be smaller, and produces much less transformer noise or hum due to its unique shape and winding pattern. A 4 coil winding pattern is still available with this core. Transformer hum is a significant issue with mains transformers, especially when used with audio equipment and various scientific and special use equipment. For that reason the laminated core transformers may include a hum strap, sometimes called a belly band. This is a wide copper strip that is wound entirely around the outside of both core and windings. By doing so, it avoids forming a shorted turn condition, but will help reduce the leakage flux. Mains transformers are also used in conjunction with other circuitry to convert AC primary current to a DC current in the secondaries through use of rectifier, smoothing and regulator stages. While a rectified circuit will run some DC equipment, the DC output has a partial wave pattern from an incompletely converted AC sine wave characteristic. Smoothing by using a capacitor will help by reducing these partial wave patterns to a point where there is a small ripple left. But full use of resulting DC from such an installation for any and all electronic circuits is not complete without a regulator step. A regulator resists the current fluctuations so the last of the ripples are filtered out and a completely straight DC is available. One caveat on connecting a mains transformer. If using a partial primary for any reason (like an improper connection), as you reduce the primary load (the rated voltage of the primary side), amperage will consequently go up by the proportional amount your load was reduced. This will put stresses on your core and you may encounter humming and eventual burnout. Another caveat is, a mains transformer, even when used for DC secondary currents, is still dangerous. It is hooked to the main service coming in to the location from the power grid. Fusing is often used to protect on both the incoming side and the outgoing sides. Especially when fusing the ingoing side it is very advisable to arrange any fuse clips used so one CANNOT contact the hot side in any way and incur a dangerous shock. Mains Transformer LabelsThe primary voltage connections are often labeled (in the 4 coil version) with 0-120V and 0-120V. The secondary voltage connections are labeled in the example with output of nine volts as 0-9V and 0-9V. A center tap version would carry a label reading 9-0-9V, for example.Highest Quality Mains Transformers
