They are also referred to as current transformers and as instrument transformers. Potential transformers are another transformer applied to metering of power. Such meter transformers are invariably step down transformers used to reduce overly large currents to manageable levels so meters and measurement instruments can be attached. The reduction must be at a predictable and accurate proportion to the main voltage and current so that metering is also accurate. They must supply isolation as well, in order to protect personnel, sensitive instruments and circuit boards from exposure to the primary circuit power levels.By standardizing and creating usable power levels meter transformers make it possible to do measurements and various forms of monitoring without resorting to heavily constructed and custom-designed devices. They open the way to select meters, monitoring devices and power control devices off the shelf. A service technician can expect to carry a limited array of repair and testing equipment for his job. He will know that he is going to be able to apply them to attain the desired information, and all within the parameters of items he can purchase from electrical tool suppliers for his work. In monitoring and measurement, as well as fault control, safety is another factor. By reducing the power level fed to instruments and controls that are often seen, touched, and otherwise exposed to human activity, the liabilities of high voltage risks are vastly diminished. Time otherwise invested in special precautions can better be put to normal routines. Expenses for high voltage safety protections are reduced. Fewer serious accidents and fatalities will occur. Meter Transformers may additionally be used in protective relay systems to isolate areas of potential fault from the main system. This helps prevent the entire system from going down when merely one component has faulted. Increased stability of the grid system is established. This helps prevent other troubles and damages to equipment and service that would otherwise have no reason to be affected. The most stable areas of operation in the power system are allowed to proceed unhampered while service and inspections can be carried on in contained operations more sensitive and potentially more unstable.Meter Transformer ConstructionTransformer basics apply to meter transformers. They have the same general application of fundamental design. Particularly in meter transformers attention is placed on assuring that coupling of primary and secondary is accurately accomplished. Otherwise, monitors and metering devices may not be reflecting true electrical characteristics and amounts existing in the primary side of the meter transformer.Some designs use a secondary winding of many hundreds of turns wrapped around a circular ring of silicon steel. The ring is passed over or surrounding the circuit measurement is being done on. This makes the primary a "single turn" as the circuit line becomes the primary of the meter transformer. Care must be taken to center the circuit line in the circle. Being off to one side may introduce inconsistencies. The main current may also be run through a copper bar that is a permanent part of the meter transformer. Meter transformers will also incorporate aspects of a fuse transformer for added safety. They may also be coupled with sets of external breakers and safety devices for further protection. CAUTION! Arcing can occur when the secondary is disconnected while the primary is still carrying current. This is because the nearly infinite effective impedance of the secondary will demand a current driven across it and a dangerous high voltage arc may occur.
