NEMA Transformer StandardsNEMA is the acronym for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association that studies and recommends standards for all manner of electrical equipment and accessories manufactured. The term NEMA Transformers usually refers to a transformer that has complied with the standards as outlined by NEMA. NEMA is not a government agency, but is a private organization representing leaders in the electrical manufacturing field. These people are concerned about establishing and standardizing technological quality and safety manufacturing practices. Part of their goal is to align all standards with existing standards as imposed or recommended by other agencies or groups. They only have the power to recommend and develop sensible guidelines. They do no policing or inspections.When a company refers to or labels its products according to a NEMA set standard they are saying that it is considered to fall within that set standard. It is a communication to their customers of proof of adherence to safe and rational parameters for the manufacturing and intended uses for that item. Though there are sometimes stated lower to higher ranges in the recommendations, there is no inference that the higher limit of quality recommendation is to be interpreted as a top limit. NEMA transformers, for instance, may meet basic standards, but may also outperform those standards without regard to any range set by NEMA. It can still validly carry the NEMA mark. For that reason, TEMCo will often state that it meets or BEATS the standards. This tells you that the product in question is possibly of superior quality, even to the recommendations, despite only carrying that mark of standard compliance for NEMA. NEMA standards often refer to the enclosures used with a NEMA transformer. Enclosures for electrical equipment can be a critical issue in installation and use of transformers. Manufacturers will often refer to the NEMA standard codings to indicate the level of application implemented with the chosen enclosure. References to NEMA transformers may also indicate the specific quality and parameters in the various materials and manufacturing practices employed in the construction of the transformer, itself, are up to NEMA recommendations. Here are only a few of the NEMA codes for enclosures: 1 - General Purpose. Dust, light and indirect splashing protected against, but not dust tight. approve for indoor use and normal atmospheric conditions. 2 - Drip tight. Addition of drip shields to type 1 construction. For severe condensation as in laundry rooms or around cooling apparatus. 3 - Resistant to weather. Protection from weather hazards like rain and sleet. Outdoor uses include places like construction work, subways, tunnels, docks. The one pictured at the upper right is a 3R) 4 - and 4x - Watertight. Must be able to withstand minimum of 65 GPM water from a 1" nozzle at a distance no less than 10 feet for 5 minutes. Outdoor use in docks, breweries and dairies. 5 - Dust tight. Gaskets or equivalent. Steel mills and cement plants. 6 - and 6P - Submersible. Design dependant on specified parameters including pressure and time: directly submersible in water: for quarries, manholes and mines. There are two other "3" designations and seven other designations after "6," three of which are for hazardous conditions. NEMA Transformer StandardsFor the transformers, themselves, NEMA developed three NEMA transformer standards. The first is for recommending efficiency levels and is TP-1. The second covers testing and is TP-2. The final one is for labeling and is TP-3. In 1992 the government initiated the Energy Policy Act, which was concerned with setting minimum efficiency standards for single phase and three phase distribution transformers of the low voltage and medium voltage dry-type and the liquid-filled type. This was a move to establish new efficient transformer designs that would help relieve the need to build so many more power plants and consume more energy producing fuels than necessary.
