Neutral Transformer Theory and ConfigurationNeutral Transformers (Neutral Ground Transformers) are especially desirable for insuring protection to people and equipment by providing a grounding path through the area of use back to the power source. By doing so, neutral grounding resistors, fuses and breakers can be installed which will cause a fault to clear while still retaining the integrity of the attached equipment. It also provides a distinct grounding path that helps prevent personnel from becoming a ground path and being electrocuted by coming into contact with a faulted condition. This form of transformer is called a Y, or wye transformer, in reference to the Y-shaped pattern the circuit diagram makes when it is charted. A delta transformer, as discussed on an earlier page, usually has no such provision for a ground or neutral and is commonly employed where a ground is usually not an issue (as in high voltage lines well above ground.) The one exception is when one leg of the secondary is center-tapped to provide a small power source for simple lighting and small power needs. Remember, though, that the three phase portion is not neutralized. This kind of transformer will very commonly be found in local distribution systems and will service residences and small businesses where grounding is not only desirable, but legally required. The two common forms of such transformers are pole mount transformers and pad mount transformers. Such transformers may or may not be delta-wye, so this must be established before adding to or working on them. While one still has to exercise caution whenever dealing with dangerous voltages, current practices have gone a long way toward assuring that injuries, accidents and deaths from electrocution will be limited. Such measures also help prevent fires and equipment failures resulting from unprotected circuits flooding electrical installations with damaging levels of voltage. It must be clearly understood that a neutral, as referred to here, is a function of the specific design and use of a transformer. It should not be confused with the term as used otherwise. A local ground can be supplied which will carry a faulted charge to ground. It will otherwise not carry any current during normal operation. A neutral, as referred to here, is wired directly to the neutral transformer as part of the normal circuitry. It may carry current during normal operation. Neutrals may be connected to earth ground at service panels or at the transformer, but they may be run to their own grounding rods separately. A neutral does not necessarily get bundled with the wires arriving from the transformer and the configuration of the transformer does not necessarily cause any of the wires to be neutral, depending on the configuration of the transformer. Neutral Transformer Construction and Wiring PracticesIn single phase transformers the center tap of the secondary is the neutral point. For three phase systems the neutral point is found at the common tap or connection point for the secondary (wye) side of the transformer. Neutral transformers can be wye-wye or delta-wye (a common one), but are almost always wye on the secondary side. In the US the three wires are often black, red and white, with the white being the neutral. It may sometimes also be gray. In the UK and other areas it is more commonly blue. In large wire installations all wires may be black with colored tape at the ends only to indicate the correct designation. Where there is a ground wire it is green or bare, and may or may not be bonded to the neutral, depending on the age of the installation. Nowadays casings and enclosures for electrical installations connected to mains power are always either neutral and earth grounded, earth grounded, or the electrical tool or appliance is double insulated.Special three phase earthing or neutral transformers are also available that use arc suppression reactors, earthing reactors or resisters to create a neutral ground. These may be delta wired. Highest Quality Neutral Transformers
