Pad Mounted Distribution Transformer Construction and use

Pad Mounted Distribution Transformers can be built to handle substation level voltages, or local distribution voltage.  In the U.S. the distribution portion of the electrical transmission system operates between 110 V and 35 kV.  The distribution portion of the energy transmission system is also broken in two.  The primary portion falls between 2.4 and 35 kV.  The secondary distribution system falls between 110 to 600 V.  The transmission system is considered to extend in a range of 69 kV and above.

Pad Mounted Distribution Transformers can also sometimes referred to as liquid transformers, liquid filled transformers or filled transformers, though all of these may also include other transformers that are not pad mounted transformers, such as pole mount transformers.  Solid non-oil transformers can also be pad mounted. They will be smaller and more suitable for indoor installations that lack sufficient space for the extra size and safety requirements of the oil filled pad mounted distribution transformer.

The oil cooled and insulated versions are made with special enclosures or combinations of constructions dictated by increased fire protection requirements for indoors conditions.  The specific cooling and insulating oil used may affect the requirements applied in indoor situations.  Outdoor configurations will have some of the anti-pollution and containment features incorporated into the design to keep the oil from running off into the soil as a result of damage or leaks.  But vaults and fire-proofing features used indoors are not a consideration out of doors.  The oil used can be mineral oil or one of the natural seed oil, silicone, or synthetics available that are much higher in fire resistance than mineral oil.  All pad mounted distribution transformers are protected by the same quality of protective security enclosures as described on the Pad Mounted Switch and the Pad Mount Switches pages except as indoor standards may require additional or alternative treatments.

Though secondary level pad mounted distribution transformers can be single phase, they are often used in commercial, industrial, institutional, government, large retail complexes and malls.  Under those circumstances they are almost invariably three phase so as to support large machinery, motors and heavy industrial, commercial or medical equipment.  They are able to be ganged up with special pad mount switchgear where this is desirable and covered by current practices, codes and laws regulating such installations.  Pad mounted transformers used in substations are often referred to as pad mount substations.  They will often include extra features for monitoring and servicing, as well as being coupled with switchgear systems to isolate the unit for servicing and repair, or for resetting and clearing of downlink faults.  These will be in the primary portion of the distribution system.  It is often the case that large industrial power users will receive their power directly off the primary distribution system while smaller commercial users and residential users are serviced by the secondary distribution level.

Pad mounting is not a new concept.  Soon after electricity was developed for power use, burial of lines was implemented along with the more conventional practice of mounting on utility poles.  Most certainly, transformers and other equipment would be, at times, mounted on pads in electrical distribution stations, electrical production stations and various other circumstances.  Tunnels were used in large cities.  However, for decades poles were a prominent feature of the skyline even inside of cities.  Eventually, pressures for more easily serviced, and more aesthetically pleasing installations, reached a level where it is now the case that above-ground lines generally only exist in very small towns and rural areas within the United States and other countries.  It can be speculated this movement may also have been accelerated when other utilities, like telephone, communication and data cables, were also developed into under-ground alternatives, as it was and still is common for multiple services to use the same power poles.
