Pad Mounted Switchgear Definition and Variations

In a large number of applications Pad Mounted Switchgear is used since it is so often desirable to bury lines.  The switchgear can be combined with pad mounted transformers in an outdoor setting with weather- and tamper-proof enclosures.  In substations you will find that pad mounted switchgear for higher voltage application is again employed since enclosures can be used to protect otherwise exposed installations from the elements.  When used in reference to the power grid, switchgear refers to the complex of circuit breakers, disconnects, fuses, etc., that are employed in isolating electrical equipment.  To work on equipment down line, the power has to have a convenient way to be shout off.  Also, downlink faults can be cleared by using the switchgear. 

Similarly, pad mounted switchgear and other variations of switchgear is placed in locations where high voltage and high amp supply enters an area . For instance, a large building or factory is serviced by several transformers in order to arrive at the volumes demanded.  It can be a pad mounted switchgear variety or installed in a whole structure to house transformers and switching equipment under one shelter.  A relatively large number of wires are run from these transformers and would be organized into networks.  Typically, for instance, in a 600 amp run one would find three 500mcm* cables composing each network coming from the transformer.  For a 6000 amp service you would need to join ten such networks.  

It is at this point you find the switchgear.  All these networks are landed at the gear.  The gear holds three phases; landed inside are matched leads.  In this way the amps of each network are joined.  In the next step, sub panel breakers are landed so power can be supplied to outside power sources.  These electrical cabinets are referred to as switchgear because there is one throw arm for each of them that cuts power to everything drawing power from it. 

*MCM refers to a wire gauge measurement system used in North America when the wire size is larger than  4/0 AWG (American Wire Gauge).  In this system the basic unit is the circular mil.  A circular mil is a wire having the cross sectional area one mil in diameter, and a mil is an distance 1/1000th of an inch.  MCM indicates 1000 circular mills. 500 mcm, cutting short a longer explanation of calculations and sizes, indicates a multiple stranded wire diameter of about .814 inches.
