Pad mount switches nowadays are increasingly valuable in bringing pad mounted switch safety standards up to par in settings where there are major power equipment installations such as in industrial plants, mills, manufacturing facilities, and processing plants.  It is vital repairmen or service personnel be free of dangerous high voltage levels where they might otherwise risk deadly shocks.  Substations also use pad mount switches to isolate transformers and other equipment.  This way,  portions of the station can be taken offline while continuing to allow service to downlink customers from other parts of the station.  Large substation installations may have whole banks of pad mount switches to handle all incoming and outgoing lines.

The use of pad mounting and metal security enclosures relieves the necessity to otherwise house equipment in more expensive shop structures.  They reduce the footprint of an installation by side-stepping the need for an entire building or set of buildings to house equipment.  In turn,  they reduce visible impact in recreational, scenic, residential and historic locales.  Pad mount switches are most easily connected to underground lines entering or exiting a facility.  This factor encourages phasing out of overhead lines. 

Ground level security cabinets enhance ease of servicing and repairs as they can be conveniently accessed by personnel.  There will generally be no climbing or unusual access issues as doors, panels and lids make meters, switches, fusing and other gear connected almost instantly available.  Organization of the various often-installed attributes, such as taps, fuses, meters, manual breakers, breaker levers, remote breaker controls, automatic breakers, and special monitoring equipment sockets,  contributes to efficiency, safety, and fast service and diagnostics.  Hybrid systems can also be installed where pad mount distribution transformers and pad mount switches are often combined into their own substation set-up.
