Phase Shifting Transformer Purpose

Phase Shifting Transformers are used on three phase power transmission networks to control the real power flow.  They contribute to prevention of thermal overload in lines and transformers.  They also help with stability in the transmission system.  Additional useful information can be found on the Dyn11 Transformer page.

Phase Shifting Transformers control flow of power among different networks–with regard to long distance parallel cables or parallel overhead lines.  Combined with reactors and capacitors they can bring control to reactive power and provide limitation of fault current.  Overload conditions on paralleling lines can be averted by re-routing power to under-loaded circuits.

Phase Shifting Transformer Construction and Use

 This is a form of three phase regulating transformer.  It is a combination of a transformer wired in series with a feeder line to a tap changer- equipped voltage transformer.  This second transformer may be called a shunt unit.  The voltage transformer windings on the secondary side are wired so that phase quadrature voltages (meaning 90 degrees out of phase) created are then directed into the secondary windings of the first transformer.  The addition of small phase quadrature portions into the phase voltages in the line causes output voltages that are phase shifted with no significant change in magnitude.  This, then, is an actual phase shift in the line.  The amount of phase shift accomplished is the vector sum of the original supply voltage and the added component.  The tap changer allows controllable phase shifting.  The tap controller connections control the phase shift magnitude by controlling the quadrature component's magnitude.

The way phase shifting transformers work to provide the control and benefits listed above is that adjusting phase influences a bucking or boosting phenomenon.  Depending on what setting is used on the tap changer the current in the line may be increased or decreased and thereby force a parallel line of greater or lesser capacity to carry the balance.  In short, it acts as a sort of traffic cop directing current to the line most suitable to carry it.  The load becomes more balanced and control is exercised so that the appropriate lines are handling the flow.  Meanwhile, a tendency for circulating currents among interconnected systems can be mitigated.  Such capabilities are very beneficial when connecting the multitudes of electrical generation and transmission systems into grids such as now exist in dozens of places globally.
