Plastic Transformer Materials

Plastic transformers are made by encasing the body of the transformer in a  pourable plastic casting resin.  They may contain any of a number of different types of plastic and other materials.  Some are also reinforced with numerous sorts of fibers or particles.  One example; fiberglass.  Sometimes they are also referred to as cast transformers or cast resin transformers.  They are a form of dry transformer. 

Specific materials used include the following:

  • polyurea

  • polyimide

  • acrylic

  • silicone adhesives

  • polymers

  • elastomers. 

Some kinds (cross-linked polymers) are heat sensitive and are hardened under heat and pressure.  These are referred to as thermoplastic (which contain trimellitic anhydride) or thermosetting resins (such as melamine.)

Elastomers provide lot of elasticity and flexibility.  They are rubber materials or synthetic compounds.  Usually, the plastics in plastic transformers are mixed like epoxies using a catalyst, activator or hardener.   Then they are poured into a cast and left to cure, or into a vat where parts are dipped and then allowed to set without a mold. 

Plastic Transformer Application

Common applications from these coatings are in  plastic transformers and coils, motors, generators, circuit breakers and switches.  They are chosen for a number of important characteristics that include things like resistance to tearing, shattering, stretching, breaking down under prolonged heat and/or pressure, density, resistance to moisture, and several other factors.

Certain polymers and elastomers are also used with electronics as potting compounds.  A potting compound is a dielectric (insulating) resin used as a filler in cavities or containers holding electronic parts.  They serve also as encapsulants where they seal or protect circuits from exposure to physical abrasion or contact and from environmental exposure.  Another application is as a vehicle for dissipating heat from areas around heat sinks and heat generating devices. 

Plastic transformers may use a combination of the applications above if the transformer happens to incorporate a variety of parts that will benefit from these applications.  Sometimes dipped plastic transformers are dipped more than once.  The successive dip or dippings may be in alternate materials.  This allows an opportunity to combine desirable characteristics and enhance the quality of the protection.  Reinforcements can also be introduced as such times.  See fiberglass transformer.
