Power Factor Transformers Explained

Power Factor Transformers are one of those subjects no less confusing for the insistence on definitions of terms couched in obscure (to the layman) mathematical terms. However, power factor is actually a relatively easily understood phenomenon. Power Factor is simply a phrase meant to describe the relationship between the real power used and the apparent power used. A perfect power factor would be 1 (one.) A power factor as actually existing in a particular transformer circuitry would be some percentage of that expressed as something below 1. The lower the value the less efficient the transformer and the more wasted energy.

If the power company sends out the equivalent of 25 watts of power to a customer they would like to be able to charge for 25 watts. The power company would also not like to have inefficient transformers creating heat and also other phenomena leading to wear and tear and other expenses. The government and the energy conservationist would both like to see power factor transformers that operated using a perfect power factor so there would be no waste of power, resources and fuels in delivery to the customer and therefore an optimum efficiency to the production of that power. The customer would like to have his equipment perfectly efficient because that would mean less stress on it and longer life. And the equipment would not have to be oversized and more expensive to deliver it.

As it turns out the formula describing power factor is actually only ideally correct. It does not apply in many cases due to real universe factors not accounted for in the original formula. Some energy can be stored in the load and will end up being returned to the source (the power company installation.)

A non-linear load is the most notorious for this and will distort the wave form and result in a similar waste. (Non-linear refers to loads that convert the wave form to some degree or result in an interruption of current that alters the wave form and may also result in harmonic frequencies.) Such non-linear loads are deliberately produced as in switching transformers in conversion of AC to DC. Applications which create open electrical arc discharges, such as in fluorescent lamps, electric furnaces and welding machines are another example.

A linear load, as in a normal uncomplicated power transformer that delivers to an induction motor, can also result in such changes. There will be some reactive power that will create lags and losses of power and reduce the power factor from 1.

Power Factor Transformer Strategies

The power factor transformer will incorporate various technological accessories and adjustments in order to improve the power factor to as near perfect as possible.

An automatic power factor correction unit will often be assembled consisting of a number of capacitors with switching done via special contactors. These, in turn, are controlled by a regulator that measures and helps adjust for power factor. The regulator will use a current transformer in measuring the current.

Sometimes a synchronous motor not connected to any load will be inserted into the circuit. This is used to absorb or produce reactive power to stabilize the voltage in the system and adjust up the power factor.

Buck boost transformers coupled with semiconductor switches and control electronics provide and active power factor correction in a switched mode power supply. This configuration could be referred to as a power factor transformer.

Computer power supplies are well known for the production of harmonics. As computers and computer controlled networks of equipment become more and more popular it is increasingly important that there be correction put on them to maintain a clean and efficient power supply from the power company. Unfortunately, it is not easily possible for these companies to predict and manages such irregularities, so equipment must be constructed so as to closely control such changes at the source. This means that installations using this form of power equipment must adequately compensate and control their effects on the power system. For this reason special power supplies (power factor transformers) are available which are constructed to filter out high frequencies and other factors that will seriously diminish the power factors of equipment they service.
