Switching Transformer Theory

Switching Transformers are also known as switch mode transformers or switch mode power supplies (SMPS) and are used for conversion of AC to DC mode. The word "switching" refers to the action of a power transistor. Inside the SMPS a transistor operates either at saturation (full on) or cutoff (full off). The desired output voltage is built in to the transistor with its duty cycle, which averages out to be the output voltage demanded. The actual core and windings may or may not be toroidal or stacked lamination core.

Though they are more complex than a usual electrical transformer, switching transformers are much more economical in size, weight and performance because they operate in a much higher frequency band. The switching takes place at a frequency in the range of tens to hundreds of kHz; rather than the usual 50-60Hz of mains power. Dealing in such small and frequent packets of power allows the switching transformer size to be much smaller.

The wave form produced is a square wave since it is an all on or all off proposition. Efficiency is greater due to the transistor not dissipating much of the power outside of its normal operational condition. It thus produces far less heat since little power is being lost. It may produce, however, electromagnetic interference (EMI) from the high-frequency, high-amplitude energy. It will also have a ripple voltage and is prone to harmonics. A low pass filter is incorporated to block these.

Rectification is the first step in converting from AC to DC. Rectification can be interpreted to mean "sort out." A diode (the name referring to the presence of two (di-) terminals (electrode.) blocks one half of the sine wave of the incoming AC current. Next the current is sent through a large filter capacitor. The capacitor allows a more consistent straight DC current by controlling the highs and lows still existing in the wave form. Another strategy can totally level off the wave form. This is the use of a choke. It is set to establish an average DC current at a level desired at the output and will only allow a straight DC current; there will be virtually no residual wave or fluctuations as might occur with a capacitor. As it happens, the description above is very rudimentary and excludes several steps that may be included. It is usually the case that there are multiple diodes and capacitors used, as well as second stage chokes. It will all depend on how particular the output must be to attain the correct voltage characteristics. The final version of such devices are often referred to as DC Power Supplies. They may be regulated or unregulated, which means either fully smoothed current or only partially smoothed. The regulated versions are best and can be used with any application it is rated for. There are some applications an unregulated switching transformer may not service without liabilities.
