Transformer Switch Variations

Numerous places in the power system require different forms of transformer switches to service a number of different situations. These will particularly be used to take loads off when under a variety of normal or abnormal circumstances. Some will be used to alter the configuration of the transformer or its connections with other equipment. And some will provide service options for customers.

Some are pad mount switches. These are discussed on the linked page. Additional data is on the pad mounted switch page.

Special tap changer switches are available. They allow external alteration to regulate voltage within the transformer as expansion increases loads and extension of lines. They are available in a variety of amperages.

Another version of transformer switch is the series multiple switch. Single phase and three phase versions in various amperages are standardly available. They reconnect parallel transformer windings in series. This creates a higher winding ration by simply throwing a switch. Voltage combinations can be handled by installing a dual-voltage switch. Stacked, or multi-layer versions make available additional combinations like triple voltages. Industrial applications exist in which ganged transformers produce high voltages for special large power operations. Pad mounted switchgear will be one of these applications.

Transformer switches called loadbreakers allow pad mount transformers to be transferred over from one power source to another with no discontinuity in service. In times of outage, service can be brought up via this transformer switch. These are very appropriate for three phase industrial and commercial applications, and for residential underground loop feed apps. They can also be used when a variety of power services are available, such as when special generator systems temporarily supply emergency power.

Note: there are two main categories of feed types; Radial Feed and Loop Feed.

Loop feed will provide a continuous path between various transformers. Breaks along that path will not bring down the entire path beyond the break. Power can still be provided by a transformer from the other end of the loop, at least to the point of break. In an emergency the break can be capped off and power supplied to all the rest of the customers. If one transformer has burned out the other can still be routing service to the entire loop.

Radial feed is like an appendage emanating from a transformer where the transformer is the last power source on the feed. Once that transformer has gone down, ALL power service is lost to the entire radial feed area beyond the break and the transformer. Until such time as the transformer is fixed service will be out to any customers on the radial feed. Additionally, because repairs for breaks may require disconnecting the feed at a pad mounted switch, service will be interrupted clear back to the transformer. There is no option for servicing customers beyond the break. A loop feed has the advantage of an alternate source continuing to service the other side of a break or failure. In all these steps transformer switches will be critical to safe disconnection of power and interruption of power during overloads.
