Call us today at 510-490-2187. What is a Triple Shielded Transformer?Triple Shielded Transformers, like all shielded transformers, use what is known as a Faraday shield. A triple shielded transformer has three independent shields whose cumulative effect is a dramatic improvement over a single shield. But, what is a shield?Faraday found that an electrical field could be blocked while not significantly affecting a magnetic field. This is accomplished simply by inserting a sheet or wrapping of a conductor between two windings or around a conductive material such as a wire. Stray (electrostatic) high frequency currents that would normally interfere with the flow of current through the windings or wire involved would normally cause static, interference, or other unwanted phenomena. Additionally, spikes can occur during switching and loading of a circuit. With the shield material in place, however, these stray currents are trapped by the shield and prevented from affecting the desired current properties. The stray currents are drained away by properly completing a circuit from the shield to a ground. One example of shielding of a wire is found in coaxial cable. There is a foil or braided wire layer that is the shield. This is contacting the coax connector and drains off the unwanted current into the ground. In a transformer, a layer of shielding placed between the primary windings and the secondary windings will intercept any spikes in current or static electricity discharged and drain it to the ground. Where are shielded transformers used? This is a useful piece of news when one is construction a transformer. In some fields shielded transformers are an absolute must. Medical equipment can be adversely affected when calibration is important for accurate readings, but these readings can be thrown off by electrostatic currents. X-Ray and imaging devices can lose clarity and encounter "noise" that is the visual manifestation of the static charges one can actually hear when working with unshielded audio equipment. Another visual manifestation can be seen in erratic movements of sensitive meter needles.Sometimes, the transient spikes can be a danger to the equipment or to anyone carelessly contacting unshielded equipment. This is especially true of medical devices, many of which are often connected to patients orally (potentially grounded through the mouth) or to some part of the body and in contact with open wounds, incisions, etc. (another potential ground.) The patient becomes the ground and the stray current departs through the body. Medical isolation transformers are used in these instances.Another common area needing triple shielded transformers is that of computer and data processing equipment and electronics. Any devices using electronic components are very susceptible to damage under conditions other electrical appliances would simply shrug off. Transistors, circuit boards, resisters, diodes, etc. are fragile and easily damaged by relatively minute non-optimum changes in voltages. And surges can be rather large, if only for an extremely short time in milliseconds. They can run 600 to 2500 volts. Attenuation of surges is very high, so the shielding can effectively save the device it is connected to. Such installations often use low voltage transformers. Why use triple shielding? Shielding becomes less effective the higher the frequency of the stray current. For that reason it is advisable to have more than one shield. The noise attenuation in a triple shielded transformer can be 180% of the attenuation reached by a single shielded transformer. Additionally, shields are used in tandem with an isolation transformer configuration so that the primary and secondary windings never actually ever physically contact each other. The coupling is made entirely through induction. This lends an added layer in safety as the full current of the primary can never flow through the secondary and possibly harm man or equipment.
